Cloves
Syzygium aromaticum
Use:
Cloves are used as flower buds, dried, whole or ground. What would desserts, punch and Christmas be without cloves? The fiery-hot taste and strong smell is almost indispensable in many dishes. The spice is very popular, and not just at Christmas time. It also seasons spicy cuisine such as game, poultry, red cabbage and many marinades. In addition, cloves are an important part of many spice blends such as Indian "Garam Masala", Arabic "Baharat" and the Chinese Five Spice Blend.
Origins:
Cloves comes from the Indonesian Moluccas tree from the so-called Spice Islands. Nowadays cloves are cultivated in Madagascar, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
