Description
It's not just Cervantes' legendary hero Don Quixote that comes from La Mancha, but also high quality, very flavourful saffron! Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world and is known for its fine, bitter taste, characteristic scent and the bright yellow colour that it gives most dishes.
Enjoy the saffron in soups, fish dishes, stews, pasta, risotto, paella and desserts.
Tips for use and storage:
- Saffron should always be stored dry and protected from light to retain its flavour as long as possible.
- You can recognize real saffron by its very delicate threads. If you put the threads in lukewarm water and it changes colour immediately, it is a fake. Real saffron only releases its characteristic yellow dye into the liquid after several minutes.
- Never put the saffron threads directly into your food, always grind them in a mortar first and always let them steep in lukewarm liquid for about 20 minutes.
- Always add the liquid with the (ground) saffron threads shortly before the end of the cooking time.
- Saffron can be used sparingly (0.5 g is enough for about 8 servings of rice).
